THE RECONDITIONED 4 LITRE ENGINE SQUEEZED INTO THE 3 LITRE CHASSIS FOR ROAD TESTING
THE ABOVE PHOTOS SHOW THE ABSOLUTELY ORIGINAL 4 LITRE ENGINE, METICULOUSLY RECONDITIONED BY CHRIS WILLIAMS OF NAPIER BENTLEY FAME, SQUEEZED INTO THE 3 LITRE CHASSIS FOR ROAD TESTING.
IN ORDER TO DO THIS WITH THE MINIMUM OF CHANGES, AS IT IS A TEMPORARY INSTALLATION AND THE ENGINE IS DESTINED FOR MY NEW CAR A 4.5/4, THAT IS A 4LITRE ENGINE IN A 4.5 LITRE REPRODUCTION CHASSIS, THE RADIATOR HAS TO BE MOVED FORWARD BY APPROXIMATELY 150MM. OF COURSE IF BUILDING A NEW CAR FROM SCRATCH THE ENGINE, BODY, GEARBOX AND PEDALS WOULD BE MOVED REARWARDS AND THE RADIATOR KEPT IN ITS ORIGINAL POSITION IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE AESTHETICS OF THE SIDE VIEW. THIS MEANS THAT A LONG CHASSIS WILL PROBABLY BE REQUIRED.
THE ENGINE IS A TYPE 2 VERSION AS DEFINED BY THE FINNED BOX EXHAUST MANIFOLD WITH THREE STUDS PER PORT AND IS ARGUABLY THE LAST ENGINE PRODUCED BY BENTLEY MOTORS BEFORE THE SALE TO ROLLS-ROYCE. ITS NUMBER IS VA4100 THE LAST IN THE SERIES OF FIFTY ENGINES MADE FOR THE LAST CAR IN PRODUCTION AT BENTLEY MOTORS.
THE INTENTION IS TO PUT IT ON A ROLLING ROAD AND GET THE POWER CURVES ONCE THE ENGINE IS PROPERLY RUN IN. THE SECOND ENGINE THAT I`M BUILDING WILL HAVE THE UPRATED CAMSHAFT FITTED AND WILL ALSO BE TESTED IN ORDER TO COMPARE OUTPUTS.

GOOD NEWS, I COLLECTED THE NEW CAMSHAFT FROM THE MANUFACTURERS AND IT WILL PROBABLY BE A FEW MONTHS BEFORE I CAN FIT IT INTO THE SECOND 4 LITRE ENGINE READY FOR TESTING. AT THIS TIME I WON`T DISCLOSE WHO THE CAM MANUFACTURER IS BUT WILL GIVE HIM A MENTION WHEN THE ENGINE TESTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT.
